In this country we congratulate the properous and follow the lives of the famous with envy. We strive to attain things which have no lasting value- we must have the largest flat screen t.v., the coolest car, take the most adventurous vacation and yet none of these things brings us any peace. Maybe a few people will be impressed, but inside, when we are all alone, we still feel empty and no matter what we accumulate it will never be enough to fill that large cavern inside. Psalm 49 brings into sharp focus that we have a finite number of days to enjoy our possessions and positions in this world.
In 1 Timothy, chapter 6, Paul makes it abundantly clear when he says that we brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing out of it. Our hope should not be in whatever accolades and acquisitions we can obtain but our hope should be in the one true God who will richly provide us with all that we need.
Psalm 49; 1 Timothy 6:6-19
